When Rob, an anaesthetics registrar, was diagnosed with Melanoma, many things were going through his mind – his long-term health, his family, the exams he had coming up, but one thing he didn’t have to worry about was his income.
“I’m a doctor so I see people every day who are sick or injured. While I don’t know much about insurance or financial planning, I have my advisers from Walshs for that. I do know medicine, so, when I was checking over the policy options from Walshs, the doctor in me took over and I looked closely at the conditions that were covered.” Rob said his knowledge then provided insight into the policy details. “I quickly realised just how common many of them were,” he says, “even as a fit, healthy, young guy it was very clear to me there was value in taking out good cover which was highly likely to pay off.”
Rob’s is one of the many claims that Walshs Insurance team see each year. Lynn Tan, Walshs Insurance and Implementation Team Leader knows it’s extremely important to be insured before a medical event occurs to ensure that you are protected and to ensure you are safeguarding your financial wellbeing. “We need to think about ourselves as an asset,” she says, “we don’t think twice about insuring our cars, so why do we think twice about insuring our greatest asset, ourselves.”
“It can be overwhelming deciding which insurer to trust and knowing you are going to be appropriately covered” she adds, “but that is where Walshs expertise and knowledge comes in. We know how important it is to ensure our clients are provided with tailored insurance solutions that suit their current needs but will also grow with them, that is why we encourage you to engage us for our complimentary annual reviews to ensure that your insurance plans continue to suit your needs as your life changes and your career grows.”
Rob’s claim was approved and provided an opportunity for him to focus on his health and busy life.
“My pay out was a combination of my taking out the comprehensive policies Walshs recommended, Walshs’ knowledge of the policies, and their relationship with my insurer. If you’re questioning the cost of your insurance premiums, ask yourself if you can afford not to be insured? My claim has reduced the stress of being diagnosed with melanoma, allowed me to focus on studying for my final exams, and I’ve been able to set aside a decent amount of money to invest which I can draw on if I need any more treatment in the future… with melanoma you never know when it could come back.”
And Rob’s advice to other doctors considering insurance? “My insurance premiums proved to be a life changing investment. Look at the conditions that are claimable – you’ll recognise these are conditions we see diagnosed every day.”
